"Acquisition and Application of Azimuthal
Resistivity Data Whilst Drilling"
Derek Allan
Baker Hughes
Lateral drilling is commonly used to extend the
producing interval for a given well; either through
extending the well length within the producing interval,
increasing net:gross, or improving fracture exposure.
However, increasing step out from the vertical or pilot
tie-in well commonly increases uncertainty. The use of
real-time LWD azimuthal resistivity measurements helps
to reduce that uncertainty through identification of key
facies, fractures plus determination and structural
realization of nearby beds.
This talk will outline the petrophysical parameters,
uncertainties and techniques than can be utilized to
improve well placement.

About the Speaker
Derek started in industry in 1985 with British
Geological Survey as mineral explorationist, joined
Canadian Geological Survey in 1986 as marine
geophysicist. Returned to the UK and joined
Schlumberger in 1987 before Joining Teleco MWD in 1988,
which subsequently became Baker Hughes. Currently
Business Development Manager—Formation Evaluation,
Western USA.

I hope that you all had a very Merry Christmas and a
wonderful New Year's! Thank you to all who came to the
Christmas Party it was so nice to see your faces.
One of the goals of your current board is to honor
the history of our society as we continue to move
forward technologically. Therefore, your board voted to
bestow the honor a lifetime DWLS membership to Al Nelson
for his exceptional contributions to the art and science
of Petrophysics, especially in the Rocky Mountain
Region. This award was presented to him at the Christmas
Party.
Al’s journey in the oilfield began when he returned
from WWII and finished his geology degree at the
University of Texas in Austin. In 1947 he started
logging wells in Rangely Colorado as a well site
geologist with Texaco, and soon after was the first
geologist in the Rockies to run density tools in the Big
Horn Basin. He discovered both the High Pockets Field
(Washington County, Colorado) and the Grandview Ranch
Field (Banner County, Nebraska) founding the currently
still producing "J" sand. In 1965 Al discovered the "D"
sand which established the Mustang Field (Weld County,
Colorado). We are honored to have him in our chapter, and
wish him all the best on his current venture out in the
Denver Basin, 62 years after sitting his first well!
Upcoming Events
The spring workshop is scheduled for March 10th and
will be on Formation Evaluation Challenges in the
Rockies, and we will be taking reservations shortly so
mark that date on your calendar. And your board is
currently working on getting a social June meeting set
up as well, so watch the website and newsletter for
details!

The DWLS 2010 Spring Technology Workshop is happening
on Wednesday, March 10th at
the Colorado School of Mines. The theme is Formation
Evaluation Challenges in the Rockies. Topics will
include:
- Shale evaluation techniques
- Evaluating reservoirs with fresh formation water
- Image logging in horizontal wells
- Unconventional uses of sonic data in
unconventional rocks: the impact of microstructure
on sonic velocities
- Logging challenges in the Bakken
- Frac monitoring with microseismic
Several of the speakers are coming in from Houston
for this event, including Paul Worthington (Gaffney,
Cline), Tad Smith (ConocoPhillips), and Michael Miller
(BP). The registration deadline is Feb. 17.

DWLS By Laws vote at the January luncheon
We will be voting on changes to the By Laws to get
them more consistent with current society needs. Please
review the documents at the following links:
Proposed By Laws, Current By
Laws, Board of
Directors Duties. The Proposed By Laws are annotated
so that you should be able to review the changes over a
cup of coffee.
Thanks to the By Laws committee members: Danielle
Strickler, Dominic Holmes, Daniel Hallau, Dan Krygowski.
Membership Applications
DWLS membership
application and
update forms are now
paperless! If you are applying for membership, applying
to change your membership, or if you need to update your
membership information, two forms are now on the
website. They are in pdf format, but the forms can be
filled out digitally and the information on the forms
emailed directly to me. If you have to pay dues, there
is a link to our PayPal page, so you can even move cash
without getting your hands dirty on real greenbacks! For
those who are already members, the paperless option to
update your membership information may be the most
useful form.
Thanks in advance for helping your society to go green.
