"Elements to Minerals - Using Gamma Spectroscopy
Data in Well Log Analysis"
Jim Bray
Halliburton
This talk will show methods for using elemental data
in petrophysical models to better define mineral
content, porosity, and mechanical rock properties in
complex reservoirs. Examples in unconventional
reservoirs, including oil and gas and shale reservoirs
will be shown.

About the Speaker
Jim Bray has survived 31 years in the oil and gas
industry, all working for Halliburton. He has held a
variety of positions starting as a Field Engineer in
Farmington, NM followed by stints in operations,
engineering, and sales. The last 20 years he has managed
Reservoir Evaluation groups in the North Sea, Russia,
North and West Africa. Currently Jim is the Regional
Petrophysics for Halliburton working in the Denver, CO
office. Jim's degree is in Electrical Engineering from
the University of Utah.

From the President

First of all I wanted to thank all of you for
allowing me to be your President this year. It has been
an honor and a privilege to be associated with such a
wonderful society! We made a lot of changes this year,
and accomplished a lot of things that I hope continue in
the future. Some of the things we as a society have
achieved this year:
- Lunch minimum: 57 Lunch maximum:110 Lunch
average:79
- Hosted and organized two sold out (110 people)
very successful workshops
- Hosted / will host the 2nd annual December and
June Socials
- Went to electronic payment through Pay Pal
- Went to electronic member registration and dues
- Organized an on-line library for extra materials
- Started writing articles every other month about
the Denver Chapter for Petrophysics
- Put together advertisements that were mailed to
colleges about the SPWLAF scholarships
- Made a $20,000 donation to the Denver SPWLAF
Scholarship
- Revised and amended the Bylaws
- Became reinstated with the Secretary of State
for the State of Colorado
- Honored Al Nelson for his lifetime achievements
and contributions
- Donated funds to SPE, RMAG, NGOGP, and the
American Diabetes Foundation
- Became a participating member of the NGOGP
- Accepted the bid to host the 2011 SPWLA
Symposium
None of this would be possible without your dedicated
and amazing board from this year, my thanks to all of
you. I would also like to thank all of our sponsors,
speakers and companies that funded our beer tickets, you
are the ones who have made and continue to make this
organization flourish.
The June meeting will be held at the Ship
Rock Grille at Red Rocks Amphitheatre on June
15th from 4-7. Please keep watching your
email about details as they become available! Come join
us celebrate another great DWLS year!

Spring DWLS Technology Workshop a Success
The spring workshop was held at CSM on March 10 with
a sold out crowd of 110 participants. Under the theme of
"Formation Evaluation Challenges in the Rockies," six
talks were presented on topics ranging from freshwater
reservoirs and horizontal image logging to rock physics
in tight sandstones and microseismic mapping. Two thirds
of participants provided feedback which was
overwhelmingly positive, with all presenters scoring
high marks. Some quotes from the survey:
"All topics were useful even if only
in a general background sense. All topics made me aware
of things I didn’t know about log analysis—interesting
fracture diversity, Archie equation pitfalls, and pore
geometries (i.e. slot, crush pores)."
"All speakers were excellent. Topics
were relevant, timely, and useful. Current challenges in
the industry were well addressed."
"I really liked the idea and result of
having an independent consultant present all service
companies’ product in one setting. It is hard to compare
apples to apples and have the source for such logging
info. I am certain there are other examples of similar
data sets to explore here. I also liked the 1-hour
dedication to each topic."
The topics of most interest suggested for future
workshops predominantly relate to shales: shale gas
analysis, oil shales (Mowry, Bakken, Niobrara), shale
permeability, petrophysical evaluation of shale plays,
TOC and brittleness in shales from non-boutique log
suites, shale properties and log crossplot analysis,
best practices for shale core analysis and shale
reservoir evaluation.
Two suggestions that have been given for possible
future workshop topics are a porosity master class, and
one on multi-mineral solvers.

From the Vice President - Membership
|
|
As many of you have discovered, digital membership
forms are alive and well on our website. You can fill
them out on your computer, mash the "Send email" button
at the bottom, and the data from the form will magically
appear at my desk, ready to be loaded to the DWLS
membership roster. You can even pay your dues in a
similar way via the form, through PayPal, without
getting your hands dirty (except for the food and drink
debris on your keyboard…).
For those who are already members, and have changed
jobs, or are contemplating changing jobs (and there seem
to be an increasing number who are doing so), a similar
process can be used to update your membership
information so you continue to get notices about our
monthly free beer. The Member Update form provides a
means for you to change contact and other information
digitally, with the information again being sent
directly to me. In this process, PayPal is not involved.
My thanks, and those of the next VP-Membership, for
being part of DWLS and for keeping your information
current.
