"Dielectric Logging Basics"
Mike Miller
Cimarex
Dielectric logging tools use electromagnetic energy
to analyze the formation and help identify water and
moveable hydrocarbons. Though this tool has been
available since the 1980s, they have had limited use.
With improvement in tool design, processing and
interpretation methodology this tool is seeing a bit of
resurgence in some areas of the country.
Especially in areas with varying salinity and mineralogy
like the Granite Wash in Oklahoma.
The basic theory behind the use of dielectric
measurement is that the dielectric phase and constant of
water is much different than dielectric phase and
constant for rocks and hydrocarbons. A description
of a few of the common tools in use and analysis
procedures will be discussed. Sensitivity of the
analysis to mineralogy and salinity will be examined.
Basic cross plotting techniques will display how
phase and/or dielectric porosity vary verses neutron and
density porosity. These differences can be
exploited to help screen for hydrocarbon bearing
intervals. Numerous well examples will be shown
where ratios of neutron, density and dielectric logs can
be used to help identify moveable hydrocarbons and may
help distinguish liquids rich zones compared to more
gaseous zones.
As many companies are beginning to focus on more
liquids rich plays, the dielectric logs may be a nice
complement to our typical logging suite to help screen
large intervals quickly to help focus our exploration
efforts.

About the Speaker
Michael (Mike) Miller PhD is a geologist with 24
years of varied geologic and petrophysical experience.
Mike is currently the Chief Petrophysicist at Cimarex
Energy, adjunct professor at the University of Tulsa,
and the president of the Tulsa chapter of the SPWLA.
Previously he was the Senior Petrophysical Advisor for
Unconventional Resources at BP, a graduate and the team
lead for the Amoco Petrophysics program. Mike is a
Certified Geologist in the State of Texas, is a member
of the AAPG, the Houston Geologic Society, the SPWLA,
SPE and the Denver Well Logging Society.
Pat Howard attended Rice University and West Texas
A&M. Received a bachelor degree in Chemistry and
Mathematics (dual major)
Pat has been a Baker Atlas employee since 1974.
He began his open hole logging career in Hobbs NM and
from 1978 to 1984 became Area Engineer in Midland,
TX and Oklahoma. He spent 10 years in technical
sales in Dallas interfacing with R&E for Arco, Mobil,
Sun(ORYX), Ensearch and the different Hunt companies.
Since 1995 he has been the Baker Atlas sales
representative and log analyst in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Pat has worked with dielectric logging and
interpretation since its introduction by Baker Atlas.
Within Baker Atlas, persons with questions about
dielectric tool responses and interpretation techniques
will ultimately end up talking to him. For
his work in Dielectric Interpretation, he was awarded
the Chairman’s Award from Baker Hughes, their most
prestigious award within the company.

Dawn Lima, Noble Energy
We held our first luncheon of 2012 on January 17th
with a talk by David Kennedy on ‘A Conductivity Model
for Archie Rocks’ we hope everyone found this talk
beneficial and also enjoyed the free beverages, this
month sponsored by Baker Hughes.
This month our meeting will be held on February 21st
and we will experiment with a new format of our lunch
service. Instead of a salad and main course,
we have opted to add more vegetables to the main dish
and remove the salad course. This change was
made with the intention of making the food service more
efficient so that all attendees have an opportunity to
finish their mains prior to our speaker’s presentation.
We would appreciate any feedback you might have
regarding the change. Please send an email to your
favorite board member and let us know your thoughts.
On a personal note, I will be going on Maternity
Leave from February 6th until April 2nd
and Antony Holmes will be replacing me during this time.
The board is hard at work organizing our Spring
Workshop, planned for May 2012. Janet
Castle, our VP of Technology, will provide more details
on this upcoming event.

Janet Castle,
Weatherford Laboratories
This year’s Spring workshop, titled ‘Petrophysics of
Horizontal Logging’, will be held at the Colorado School
of Mines again. A date in April or May will be confirmed
soon. We have several excellent speakers that will
focus on the petrophysics and integration of horizontal
logging. We are still working on the final program, but
here is the tentative schedule of topics:
- Production Logging
- Well Log Analyses- Horizontal vs. Vertical
- Imaging and Mineralogy Tools
- Integrating Coring with Logs
- Mechanical Properties
- And More
We are confirming a few more speakers, so these
topics may be revised. A formal announcement will be
going out soon.
If you have any suggestions for topics or speakers,
please feel free to contact me.
