Pressure-Dependent Permeability of Shale Reservoirs and Implications for Estimated Ultimate Recovery

Greg Salter
Core Laboratories

Abstract

The bulk permeability of shale reservoirs has contributions from matrix, open natural fractures (if present), un-propped hydraulic fractures, and propped hydraulic fractures to varying degrees.  Through the joint industry projects conducted by Core Laboratories, the permeability and/or conductivity for these have been measured.  These data have all demonstrated a decline to varying degrees with increasing overburden pressure, which can be a proxy for drawdown and pore pressure depletion and has significant implications on well performance.  The presentation will review case history comparisons of open-choke and restricted-rate wells and their effect on EUR and whether the initial permeability loss due to high drawdown is reversible and what would happen if an open-choke well is later rate-restricted.  Several shale reservoirs will be used as case history examples.

From the President

Yulia Faulkner

Dear DWSL Members and Friends, wherever you are, I truly hope you are staying safe, warm, and sound!

Denver Well Logging Society is sending best wishes to the state of Texas. As most of you know, Texas was hit with the worst winter storm it has had in the last 70 years. While most of the power is thankfully being restored, so many Texans were left with busted waterlines, without the bare necessities they need to survive. Reach out to fellow members in Texas, send them love and prayers, as they work through hard times to stabilize, rebuild, and just get back to living.

Thank you for your continuing support and great monthly luncheon attendance! Spring workshop is around the corner, spread the word, attend if you can.

From the VP - Technology

Jenny LaGesse

Thank you to everyone who attended February’s webinar. Our SPWLA Distinguished Speaker Luis Quintero (Halliburton) delivered an interesting presentation on tight gas formations and the resulting Q&A with our audience made for a great lunch hour. We have received a lot of positive reviews from this, and all our webinars, and we appreciate your feedback for this new platform while we maintain social distancing protocols.
  • Registration is open for this month’s webinar featuring Greg Salter (Core Laboratories) and his talk, “Pressure-Dependent Permeability of Shale Reservoirs and Implications for Estimated Ultimate Recovery.” The webinar will be on Tuesday, March 16, 2021. This event is free but you must register to attend.  Registration: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/545638553356562448

Registration for the DWLS 2021 Spring Workshop is open! We are excited to open registration for our spring workshop: “Horizontal Petrophysics: Applications and Interpretation Techniques in Reservoir Characterization” after the pandemic-induced cancellation of this annual DWLS event in 2020. The workshop will be held online on April 29, 2021, from 9 am – 4 pm. We have nine expert speakers with original research, including three SPWLA Distinguished Speakers, Denver locals, as well as international guests. This is one to get on your calendar early!
After this past season of free monthly luncheons, we have decided to charge for this all-day event. Registration will include a workshop PDF with speaker abstracts, bios, and presentation slides. The agenda and speaker abstracts will be emailed to members and available online.
