Abstract
Magnetic resonance logging has proved invaluable in identificatio and quantification of petroleum reserves but has been underutilized in other georesources industries. Recent developments in slimbore magnetic resonance has opened up the applications for the technology to assist in groundwater studies, geotechnical evaluation of the subsurface, and various aspects of mining including identifying moisture content of ore and providing coal seam gas quantification. This talk demonstrates the broad range of magnetic resonance logging applications and gives a variety of use cases along with technical considerations that should be undertaken when proposing the technology and interpreting the data.
Speaker Biography
Marcus Donaldson received a PhD in magnetic resonance at University of California, Berkeley before joining Schlumberger where he first worked as a wireline field engineer before moving into research. As a research scientist, he developed methods and instrumentation for downhole magnetic resonance measurements, with focus on applications relevant to the oil industry. Marcus has broad experience in well logging, laser physics, chemical analysis, and other magnetic resonance applications. He has even built medical MRI systems. Marcus currently works at Mount Sopris Instruments in Denver, Colorado in conjunction with Qteq, and Australian instrumentation manufacturer and service company. His current title is Business Development Manager and he works primarily with Borehole Magnetic Resonance.

From the President

Spring is here. After surviving the bomb cyclone, I am sure we are all ready for some flowers and outdoor barbeques. Thanks to Margaret for an excellent presentation in March showing a facies based petrophysical workflow in the Delaware basin. We are looking forward to the luncheon this month, where Marcus Donaldson will be presenting on magnetic resonance logging.
If you would like to give a presentation about the topic of 'Multiscale Imaging for Reservoir Optimization' there are still a few weeks left to get your abstract in for the Fall 2019 RMAG DWLS conference. Specific topics of interest include imaging at all scales, SEM, modeling and applications of reservoir characterization for conventional reservoirs, unconventional reservoirs, EOR, completions and production, etc. If you are interested in submitting an abstract or sponsorship opportunities, please contact Katerina Yared (kyared@sm-energy.com).
As always, please contact me if you have any suggestions to continue to improve DWLS.
