Our RMAG-DWLS Fall Symposium is coming pretty fast it will be held on October 22nd, we have eleven speakers covering the topic of Multiscale Imaging for Reservoir Characterization. We are also in early discussions of our Spring workshop, so if you have any ideas or suggestions, or would like to volunteer for the event, please don’t hesitate to contact our VP of Technology.
We are also very excited to announce that the DWLS is joining DERL, RMAG, AIPG, SPE, and RMS-SEPM for a special gathering at DERL on October 30th from 4 to 7 pm. From the VP - Technology
Jenny LaGesse
Ah, October. The return of autumn leaves, chilly evenings, and all things pumpkin spice puts me in the mood for an evening in a library. Better yet, a geoscience library. I love libraries. The smell, the hush – they are pockets of knowledge scattered throughout human history, our own personal histories, and our immediate communities. Whether marveling in the Beinecke, napping in the stacks of Watson, or looking for oil and gas in the Rockies in Denver’s own DERL (Denver Earth Resource Library), libraries have been cornerstones in my life and most likely, yours too. Libraries and access to papers in the last decades have increasingly gone online, connecting more people to more information faster, dissolving traditional obstacles to learning. Fortunately, sanctuaries like DERL remain to house treasures that can’t easily be appreciated in a PDF: hard copies of well logs, large-scale maps, scout tickets, microfilm, and collections of special studies dating back to the 1800s. DWLS is happy to co-sponsor a Night at the Library this October 30 from 4-7 pm at the DERL, and we invite you all for a free(!) evening to enjoy food, drinks, and conversation. This event will also be our winter social event this year, so you don’t want to miss meeting your friends and colleagues in this unique setting and soaking in the fall ambiance (along with a few specialty cocktails).
This month’s October 15th luncheon speaker is Don Herman of Cordax Evaluation Technologies, who will present Continuous Improvement of Well ROI, focusing on methods to mitigate cost and time risks in open-hole logging, improve completion efficiency, and lower frac costs. We hope to see you there!
Coming up November 19, we are pleased to welcome back Robert Lieber of Corsair Petrophysics, with his talk, Conventional Petrophysical Tools for Improved Understanding of Unconventional Reservoirs.
Finally, the DWLS-RMAG Fall Symposium, Multiscale Imaging for Reservoir Optimization on October 22 at the Sheraton Denver West is nearly here and early-bird pricing ended October 1. With 11 excellent talks from operators, vendors, and universities, this is an event that will support and further your professional education and performance.
The cost of the symposium is $225 for DWLS and RMAG members, $275 for non-members. Registration includes breakfast, lunch, and a reception to follow the talks.

From the Treasurer
Peter Kaufman
As of September 23, 2019 the DWLS bank account status was as follows:
Checking = $27,274.50
Savings = $2,554.20
For the operating year ending June 30th (July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019)
Revenue = $29,547.24
Expenses = $21,345.80
Donations = $30,000.00
As in previous years, the bulk of our revenue derives from monthly luncheons, workshops, and membership fees, along with amounts from sales of newsletter advertising sponsorships. Similarly, most of our direct expenses come from monthly lunches, workshops and assorted amounts from speaker gifts and business operating expenses.
In December 2018, the DWLS board made a $30,000 contribution to the SPWLA Foundation Scholarship fund to support graduate students in the Rocky Mountain region. This donation brought our bank balance down to an appropriate level for our non-profit organization.
DWLS continues to enjoy a strong fiscal disposition thanks to our strong membership support and well-attended luncheons and short courses.
