Abstract
A well log measurement can be modeled as the sum of three components: the formation signal, random noise, and systematic error. The sources for systematic error include tool malfunctions, shop and field miscalibrations, operator error, and inherent hardware design limitations, Log calibration, more commonly referred to as log normalization is the process of applying corrective shirts to well logs to minimize the systematic error. In this paper, we develop a machine learning approach to the multi-well log normalization problem which we believe is particularly applicable in unconventional field studies involving hundreds of wells of varying data quality and vintage.
Speaker Biography
Ridvan Akkurt is a Domain Consulting Petrophysics Advisor in the Schlumberger Global Unconventional Asset Consulting Group in Denver. He was previously Research Director at Schlumberger-Doll Research in Boston heading the Reservoir Geosciences Department, and Petrophysics Advisor at Schlumberger SIS Headquarters in London. Ridvan began his career in 1983 as a Schlumberger wireline field engineer in Africa, then worked for a number of companies including GSI (Geophysical Service Incorporated), Shell, NUMAR, NMR+, and Saudi Aramco; in international and domestic assignments. He has a BS degree in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, USA, and a PhD degree in geophysics from the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, USA. Ridvan has many publications and 20+ US patents, has taught industrial courses, served as a Distinguished Lecturer for SPE and SPWLA, and a reviewer for industrial journals.

Welcome to 2020! This year welcomed us with beautiful sunny weather in Denver. There is still time to send your abstracts for the DWLS Spring workshop on “Horizontal petrophysics: Applications and interpretation techniques in reservoir characterization”, contact Jenny LaGesse at VP_Technology@spwla.dwls.org if you are interested. With the immense amount of data gathered every day from horizontal wells, we are very excited to hear how people are using that information to better understand the reservoir and how to exploit it.
On a different note, our VP of technology has done a great job aligning great speakers for all our remaining luncheons for the 2019-2020 season, including two distinguishes SPWLA speakers (in May and April). Make sure to check the VP of Technology section for all the details.
The DWLS board wishes you an excellent 2020 full of exciting projects and opportunities for growth.

From the VP - Technology
Jenny LaGesse
Now that we’ve waved goodbye to 2019 and the fantastic speakers we heard over the last 12 months, it’s time to brush off the pine needles, wipe away the eggnog and look forward to the excellent speakers lined up for our monthly series in 2020. This month, we will hear from Ridvan Akkurt of Schlumberger and his talk “Machine Learning for Well Log Normalization.” That will be followed by Max Peeters who will speak on “Clay Types Derived from Logs Using the Petrophysical Stepchild ‘Photo-electric Effect’ and Apparent Matrix Densities” in February. In March we are pleased to welcome back Daniel Krygowski of The Discovery Group and learn from his presentation, “Pattern Recognition in a Digital Age: A Gameboard Approach to Determining Petrophysical Parameters.”
Wrapping up our luncheon series this year we are very excited and honored to host two 2019-2020 SPWLA Distinguished Speakers. First, in April we present Chelsea Newgord from UT Austin with her talk, “A New Workflow for Joint Interpretation of Electrical Resistivity and NMR Measurements to Simultaneously Estimate Wettability and Water Saturation.” Following in May is Melanie Durand of Shell, who will speak on “Crushed Rock Analysis Workflow Based on Advanced Fluid Characterization for Improved Interpretation of Core Data.” You won’t want to miss these!
Finally, don’t snooze on submitting your abstract for our Spring Workshop, Horizontal Petrophysics: Applications and Interpretation Techniques in Reservoir Characterization! Your procrastination alarm bells should be going off, as time is running out for you to submit your abstract on time and share your technical expertise with our community. Abstracts are due January 17, 2020. We welcome abstracts in all things lateral and log analytical including:
- Deviated/horizontal well petrophysics
- Applications to Geosteering
- Vertical log concepts as applied to horizontal targets
- Applications to reservoir characterization in unconventional reservoirs
- Applications to optimizing completions, production, and estimating OOIP
- LWD interpretation techniques
Abstracts should be 250-500 words. The workshop will be held on April 29, 2020, in Golden, Colorado at the American Mountaineering Center. Submit your abstract today to VP_Technology@dwls.spwla.org.
