Abstract
Graphical pattern recognition interpretive techniques have been part of petrophysics since quantitative interpretation began, as a way to quickly determine properties of interest with a minimum of calculations. When calculators and computers were introduced to petrophysics, the focus of the techniques changed from determining the quantities themselves to determining the parameters needed to calculate those quantities. As an example, Hingle (1959) and Pickett (1966, 1973) plots, first used to quickly determine water saturation for a few points in a reservoir, can now instead be used to determine the parameters needed in Archie’s (1942) water saturation equation, so that the parameters and associated well log data can be used to calculate water saturation in much more detail and with more precision than before.
Speaker Biography
Daniel A. Krygowski is a Senior Petrophysical Advisor at The Discovery Group, in Denver, Colorado, USA. Currently, he is spending most of his time providing and developing training courses in basic and intermediate open-hole petrophysics. The courses include the common instructor-led formats, as well as longer-term, lower intensity formats that allow participants to spend more time with the course material while delving deeper into areas of personal interest.
From the late Cretaceous to the Holocene, Dan taught the AAPG Basic Well Log Analysis course with Dr. George Asquith. In recent years, Rick Lewis, with Schlumberger, joined George and Dan as an instructor in the course.
In 2004, the AAPG published Basic Well Log Analysis, co-authored by Dan and George, with Steve Henderson and Neil Hurley. The book is the second edition of George’s similarly named book which was one of AAPG’s all-time bestsellers, and the second edition has also become an AAPG best seller with over 12,000 copies sold.
Dan earned a BA in Physics from the State University of New York at Geneseo. He then earned MS and Ph.D. degrees in Geophysics from the Colorado School of Mines, where he focused on petrophysics as a student of Dr. George R. (Dick) Pickett.
After completing his formal education, Dan worked for Cities Service Company, Atlantic Richfield, Petrophysical Solutions, Landmark Graphics, and Chevron. At several of those companies, he held positions in petrophysics and petrophysical software development, with both technical and management responsibilities. He joined The Discovery Group in late 2006.
Dan is a member of SPWLA, AAPG, SPE, SEG, DWLS, and RMAG.

Registrations are open for the DWLS Spring workshop, Jenny LaGesse put together an excellent speakers lineup that you can check here (http://dwls.spwla.org/2020_Spring_Workshop.htm). We have been able to keep the cost low for participants, so we hope everyone can make it. After the workshop please join us for a happy hour, it is an excellent opportunity to do networking and chat with your colleagues. We are also working on the RMAG-DWLS workshop which will be held October 27th in Golden, we will be sharing more details as they become available.

From the VP - Technology
Jenny LaGesse
Although the snow and early sunsets are deceptively convincing that we are permanently frozen in February, time really does keep on slippin’ slippin’ slippin’ into the future. Consider the evidence: the annual “spring forward” of the clocks this week, followed by the vernal equinox less than 2 weeks later, and most importantly – the DWLS Spring Workshop is just around the corner!
That’s right, it’s time to put a spring in your step and register today for the Spring Workshop on April 29, 2020 [editor note: the special membership pricing email was sent out on February 20th]. The topic is “Horizontal Petrophysics: Applications and Interpretation Techniques in Reservoir Characterization”. We are excited to announce our 12 speakers (including 1 SPWLA Distinguished Speaker) and the technically challenging, relevant, and diverse topics they are bringing to our community. Registration, agenda, and speaker abstracts are available at dwls.spwla.org. Don’t wait, this one will fill up fast!
This month’s DWLS luncheon speaker will be a Denver favorite, Dan Krygowski of The Discovery Group, who will present on March 17th his talk: “Pattern Recognition in a Digital Age: A Gameboard Approach to Determining Petrophysical Parameters”.
In April and May, we are extremely pleased to welcome 2 SPWLA Distinguished Speakers to the Wynkoop. In April we are looking forward to Chelsea Newgord (UT Austin) and her talk, “A New Workflow for Joint Interpretation of Electrical Resistivity and NMR Measurements to Simultaneously Estimate Wettability and Water Saturation.” In May, Melanie Durand (Shell) will join us and wrap up our Spring 2020 season with “Crushed Rock Analysis Workflow Basin on Advanced Fluid Characterization for Improved Interpretation of Core Data”.
If our tantalizing Spring 2020 speaker lineup alone isn’t enough of a reason to get downtown, we have a very generous drink sponsor this season in Emerson Automation Solutions to draw you in. Register for our talks here http://dwls.spwla.org/Luncheon_Reservation.htm.
Finally, let us peer even further into the future, as the DWLS-RMAG Fall Symposium planning committee has been busy! The symposium will be held on October 27, 2020, at the American Mountaineering Center in Golden. The Call For Papers is out for our joint symposium topic: “Maximizing Value of Core and Fluid Analysis”. The abstract deadline is May 1, 2020. We welcome abstracts in the following categories:
- Core facies modeling beyond cored well: capabilities and limitations
- Recent improvements in core analysis techniques
- Petrophysical calibration using advanced core analysis
- Fluid Analysis: Advances & applications to reservoir characterization
- Beyond basic core analysis: Geomechanics, wettability, etc.
- New analysis of old cores/cuttings: capabilities and limitations
- Case studies, Applications in Modeling, Improvements in reservoir characterization
More information can be found at the RMAG website https://www.rmag.org/continuinged2/rmag-dwls-fall-symposium/.
