Use of horizontal logs to map reservoir properties

Patricia E. Rodrigues
SeisPetro Geoconsulting

Abstract

Mapping reservoir properties in unconventional plays in the US is a challenging task because verticals wells are scarce and, in many instances, only a fraction of those have modern logs. Although horizontal wells are abundant, they are typically also data poor and even when a full suite of logs do get recorded, these data are rarely used to constrain reservoir property mapping. In this work, we show two case studies in which horizontal logs were incorporated into reservoir mapping and modeling.

In the first example, we show the use of triple combo data from horizontal and vertical wells to map water saturation in an unconventional reservoir. Water saturation is not only the main performance driver in the reservoir but also helps delineate the extent of the field. We discuss the challenges of calibrating vertical vs. horizontal petrophysical models to account for the differences in sampled rock volumes. We also talk about the challenges posed by horizontal wells crossing multiple intervals and how to filter and prepare the data for mapping.

In the second example, we show the use of gamma ray data from horizontal logs to constrain brittle facies mapping using seismic data. We discuss the importance of proper normalization of horizontal to vertical log data. Also, we address the importance of careful time to depth conversion for proper facies calibration of the seismic data when using log from horizontal wells.

Horizontal logs in the US comprise a vast source of information that is currently underutilized. Geoscientists need to think creatively and use all the tools at their disposal to efficiently exploit this information and improve both reservoir understanding and performance prediction.

Speaker Biography

Patricia Rodrigues received a Ph.D. in geophysics from Colorado School of Mines and a B.S. and M.S. in chemical engineering from Universidad Simón Bolivar (Venezuela). She is an expert on multimineral analysis and has taught this class at Colorado School of Mines for seven consecutive years as part of the Advanced Petrophysics class. She has more than 20 years of experience in research and application of reservoir characterization technologies, specializing in petrophysics and rock physics for the oil and gas industry. She worked 8 years for PDVSA-Intevep and two years for Tricon Geophysics on seismic petrophysics and integrating well data through rock physics methodologies. In 2006, she joined DRM Energy Corp., a startup oil and gas company, while she also worked for iReservoir as a senior petrophysicist. After iReservoir, she went back to school to complete her Ph.D. while working part-time for Newfield Exploration Company. In 2014, she joined Whiting Petroleum Corporation where she has been Chief Petrophysicist and, more recently, Director of Geology and Geophysics. She is currently Petrophysical and Geoscience Advisor at SeisPetro Geoconsulting and senior consultant for Strategic Decisions Group.  Patricia has served the Denver Well Log Society as VP of Technology, and President.

Dear DWLS Members, Colleagues, and Friends,

Happy New Year! I would like to wish you and your families a safe, healthy, extraordinary, and hopefully prosperous 2022!
Welcome back to DWLS 2022 year, I hope you all had a wonderful holiday break with loved ones and are ready to start the new year strong! DWLS has great talks lined up for the next 5 luncheons, which we will continue to hold at Wynkoop and in–person. We are also planning to have a spring workshop. Stay tuned and keep checking the DWLS website for upcoming events.

I had a great holiday break and was surrounded by my family, it was such a treat to celebrate Christmas with family like we used to, before COVID. Everything was wonderful and merry, but not white, no snow, not even a glimpse of it. After reading some of the material about different areas in the world and when they got snow, things are changing and it’s very noticeable!

Will 2022 be as challenging as 2021 for the O&G industry or will we see improvements? Currently, global oil consumption exceeds oil production and is driving oil prices, however, due to the new variant, covid cases have been spiking across the world, travel bans, flights cancellations, closures are driving oil price to fluctuate with big gains and big declines. The range of possibilities is quite wide, reflecting both uncertainty about the global economy as well as the high sensitivity of current prices to expectations for the economy. Let’s hope to see some stability not only In our industry but also in our pandemic lives.

As always, please, do not hesitate to let us know how we can serve you better.

From the VP - Technology
