The Lyons Sandstone – A Case History of a Conventional Reservoir in an Unconventional Basin

Bob Lieber
Corsair Petrophysics

Abstract

The Lyons Sandstone is a Permian aged sandstone that is a conventional reservoir that is highly productive within the DJ Basin.  While the Lyons Sandstone is well documented in the literature it has been mostly ignored in the recent rush to develop unconventional reservoirs in the DJ Basin.  The Lyons produces oil and some gas from low relief subtle four-way dip closures.  The Lyons Sandstone responds well to a conventional petrophysical workflow being a well-sorted fine-grained sandstone with varying cement mineralogy.  Using public domain core analysis, core photos and mineralogy reports it is possible to build a robust petrophysical model for the Lyons Sandstone. The analysis of the Lyons exhibits some interesting challenges including cement mineralogy and water chemistry that makes it an interesting petrophysical case study.  This talk will explore workflow issues with the Lyons Sandstone with some implications for future exploration.

Speaker Biography

Robert Lieber is a petrophysicist with over forty years of varied petrophysical experience in domestic and international offshore and onshore basins with a focus on challenging reservoirs.  Bob has split his career between operating companies and consulting activities from supermajors to one-off consulting projects.  Bob is currently with Corsair Petrophysics as a consulting petrophysicist where he splits his time between technical activities and mentoring the next generation of petrophysicists and integrators.  Bob has a long track record in integrated reservoir studies with an emphasis on seismic reservoir characterization.  He also has extensive experience with workstations and computers relating to log analysis, geological mapping, and stratigraphic modeling using seismic attributes and geostatistics.  Bob is a former SPWLA Distinguished Lecturer, an AAPG Certified Petroleum Geologist, past president of the SPE GCS Reservoir Study Group, and a member of the SPWLA and SPE.  He has published numerous papers in the SPWLA, AAPG, GCAGS, and GSA on a variety of topics dealing with reservoirs of both conventional and unconventional natures.  He has given talks to SPE, SPWLA, GSA, and SEG sections all over the world.

From the President

Yulia Faulkner

I hope you are staying safe and sound, with the recent events that shook the world, it’s very clear that nobody can predict or know what the future holds, what conflicts will happen, what will be the consequences. Oil shot over $100 per barrel; we haven’t seen these high prices since 2014. What can we expect? More inflation - probably? Higher gasoline prices - absolutely? What US oil producers will do to answer? Lots of questions are rambling in our heads, more things to worry about, the unknown and not being able to do anything about it – is the biggest concern we have. Please stay safe friends!

On a positive note, thank you all for attending luncheons, the attendance has been slowly growing and we will keep on making improvements. Two luncheons left for this 2021/2022 DWLS year and a workshop, please don’t forget to check the DWLS website for more information. DWLS will be raising prices for luncheons starting in 2022/2023 season.

I am calling for volunteers for DWLS 2022/2023, please reach out if you would like to volunteer, we do have a few positions available and would like your help.

From the VP - Technology

Jenny LaGesse

Thank you to our February speaker, Gama Firdaus, (CSM) for an interesting talk that engaged our members over lunch at the Wynkoop last month. We encourage everyone to return this month to see a familiar face with a new talk as Bob Lieber (Corsair Petrophysics) presents “The Lyons Sandstone – A Case History of a Conventional Reservoir in an Unconventional Basin”.

In the months to come our luncheons will feature:
  • April 19, 2022: Scott Jacobson, NoHiddenPay LLC, “Dielectric-Spectroscopy Observations while Drilling in U.S. Unconventional Reservoirs”
  • May 17, 2022: Isaac Easow, Geolog Americas Inc., “Advanced Surface Logging Techniques Provide Cost-Optimized Solutions for Reservoir Characterization”
Please register online and we look forward to seeing you there.

The DWLS 2022 Spring Workshop on Cased Hole Formation Evaluation (CHFE) is just two months away! This year we are honored to present Jim Hemingway (NoHiddenPay, LLC), who is both a former SPWLA President (2020–2021), and a former SPE Distinguished Speaker.

It will be a 2-day workshop held April 13–14, 2022 at the Tabor Center in downtown Denver. Jim will lead the short course, which will cover older CHFE methods as well as newer technologies, focusing specifically on formation evaluation applications.

Cost will be $125 for members, $175 for non-members, and $50 for students, and will include a PDF of course materials, and meals. A detailed course description and links to register will be emailed to members and available on the DWLS website.
