Deep Learning for Multi-Well Automatic Log Correction

Vanessa Simoes
Schlumberger

Abstract

Researchers have dedicated to numerous applications of machine learning (ML) techniques for field-scale automated interpretation of well-log data. A critical prerequisite for automatic log processing is to ensure that the log characteristics are reasonably consistent across multiple wells. Manually correcting logs for consistency is laborious, subjective, and error-prone. For some wellbore logs, such as gamma ray and neutron porosity, borehole effects and miscalibration can cause systematic inconsistencies or errors that might be present even after the application of wellbore and environmental corrections.

Biased or consistently inaccurate data in the logs can confound ML approaches into learning erroneous relationships, leading to wrong lithology prediction, reservoir estimation, incorrect formation markers, etc.

To overcome such difficulties, we have developed a deep learning method to provide petrophysicists with a set of consistent logs through the multi-well automatic log correction (MALC) workflow. Presently, the corrections we target are systematic errors on the standard logs, especially gamma ray and neutron logs, random noises, and to a lesser extent, local formation property misreading due to washouts. We performed multiple field tests using the proposed method worldwide in oil fields for log correction.

In the presentation we will give a short introduction to the proposed Log Quality control workflow, motivation for log correction, methodology and assumptions, and two field applications using triple combo and quad combo logs.

As the end of the year approaches, we would like to invite you to celebrate with us at the Holidays Party. Please join us in your ugliest sweater for an afternoon of drinks, food, and music on November 15th, 2022 at Raices Brewing Company.

This is a free event, but $10 donations are welcome to support two local causes:
  1. Girls Inc: a nonprofit organization that encourages all girls to be "Strong, Smart, and Bold" through direct service and advocacy. The organization equips girls with the skills to navigate through economic, gender, and social barriers and to grow up as independent individuals. It is one of the longest continuously operating organizations offering girls-only programming. They have a location here in Denver.
  2. The Center on Colfax: a nonprofit organization. The largest LGBTQ community center in the Rocky Mountain region. It focuses on providing access to free services (HIV/STI screenings, insurance help, mental health counseling, social support), as well as programs and resources to educate/support the LGBTQ community.
Raices Brewing Company is a family-friendly place, so kids are allowed.  It is located next to the Meow Wolf at 2060 West Colfax Ave Denver, CO 80202.  It has a decent parking space, but also at only a 9 min walk from the Empower Field at Mile High Station for those that use public transportation.

Please RSVP by Monday, November 14th.

**Special thanks to Diversified Logging for sponsoring this event.

From the President

Tamara Maxwell

I enjoyed seeing many of you at last month’s meeting to hear about advances in acoustic imaging, a soft spot of mine! It was enlightening to hear about using geomechanical models combined with imaging to determine the contribution the fractures could have to production!
We have one more lunch meeting in 2023, also keep an eye out for an announcement about our Holiday Happy Hour which is back this year. Time is certainly flying by!

As a reminder to the community, the SPWLA annual symposium is set for June 10-14 in Conroe, TX. The deadline for submitting an abstract is November 7th, if you have something interesting you’ve been working on to share you can submit an abstract here: https://www.spwlaworld.org/call-for-abstracts/

As always please feel free to reach out to any of your board members with questions or suggestions. See you all in November!
