Meeting Class VI CCS MRV Requirements Using Unified Subsurface and Surface Measurement Technologies

KC Oren
GeoStar Energy Partners

Abstract

As every potential CCS project operator discovers in the early evaluation of a disposal and storage project, the rigors of Class VI permitting and the ability to demonstrate to governance full compliance with MRV requirements can be unwieldy. In some cases, seemly impossible. Operators learn that compliance is extremely challenging and even cost-prohibitive to meet regulations under Class VI guidelines and rules.

This presentation will focus on widely used and well-accepted monitoring technologies that can be combined for a lower cost, and even more timely and resolute, unified solution towards meeting Class VI project requirements. The advantage of using integrated technologies is a shortened cycle-time for monitoring and, consequently, can be a less expensive, earlier intervention path when a combination of fail-safe technologies are deployed and utilized together.

Since Class VI requirements dictate that a CCS operator monitor, report, and validate CO2 project progression and success, or even more importantly, failures, timely project tracking is mission-critical and is an essential process that ensures that Q45 Carbon Credits are being granted and properly applied. And even beyond those important factors, early detection of reservoir leakage and a failure to hold the sequestered CO2 can prevent a more catastrophic event to evolve into a project failure and termination at any time in the life of any sequestration project.

Unified technologies for meeting MRV requirements and ensuring the success of any CCS project to be presented include: 4D seismic, fiber deployed DTS/DAS in monitoring wells, chemical tracers for validating reservoir models with empirical data collected at the surface (soil samples, domestic water wells, atmospheric and near-surface sentry systems) and subsurface (monitoring wells and soil samples and aquifer testing), and air monitoring sentry systems that are currently used for meeting methane emissions compliance requirements in most US jurisdictions.

Details of each technology and examples of the application of optimized unified solutions will be discussed.

Speaker Biography

KC Oren has over 40 years of experience in the oil and gas industry with Batchelor degrees in Chemistry (’77) and Mathematics (’79) from Michigan State University, and MBA studies (certificate) from Mays Business School at Texas A&M (College StationKC’s career has spanned drilling, geological, petrophysical and geophysical domains by providing services and applications for Halliburton (3X), Schlumberger (Smith Bits), Baker (Teleco), GeoGraphix, Horizontal Solutions International and, today, GeoStar Energy Partners.

Most recently, KC has blended his early career and D&C background with the geosciences by providing interdisciplinary support to the industry. His industry-sponsored tours have featured his storytelling of the virtues of “Drilling the Perfect Horizontal Well” while assisting operating companies that are looking for new and edgy, emerging technologies for use in their own E&P projects.

KC’s most recent foray is in helping the oil and gas industry leverage existing technologies and expertise now for CCUS/CCS applications, primarily for Class VI permitting, project monitoring (MRV) requirements and meeting the rigors of environmental compliance for qualifying 45Q carbon tax credit projects.
