Conventional Petrophysical Tools for Improved Understanding of Unconventional Reservoirs

Robert Lieber
Corsair Petrophysics

Abstract

The petrophysical interpretation of unconventional mudstone reservoirs has been and continues to be one of the greatest challenges for the petrophysical community. Great progress has been made using high-end tool suites, but for the routine analysis of these rocks, our discipline continues to rely on Archie based fluid saturation solutions. The use of the Archie Equation has many well-documented shortcomings in mudstone reservoirs, but it remains the go-to workflow in the current environment of low logging budgets and reliance on legacy data sets.

This talk focusses on approaching mudstone reservoirs as if they were conventional reservoirs, but in a non-Archie rock sense. The use of shaley sand workflows for a better understanding of net reservoir (net pay) is borrowed from the Thomas – Steiber workflow for thin-bedded reservoirs. In addition, the delineation of wettability is determined by the use of DEW plots, a standard tool for delineating oil-wet reservoirs. For each of these crossplot tools, we will look first at their application in a conventional reservoir and then test their application in a variety of mudstone reservoirs. The results of these investigations provide another tool in locating the “sweet spot” in a vertical wellbore and allow the mapping of these “best” rock types to facilitate horizontal development.

These methods are not “silver bullets” by any means, but they do allow the intelligent determination of electrically based (Archie) fluid saturations in a more defendable manner. More importantly, they allow the delineation of best quality rocks based on standard data sets. These approaches do not replace the high-end data analysis using NMR or Dielelctric tools, but allows the tuning of these methods with the integration of these high-end data sets. The resulting approach gives better answers on not only hydrocarbon volumes in place, but on deliverability and reservoir effectiveness as well.

Speaker Biography

Robert Lieber is a Petrophysicist with over 35-years of varied petrophysical experience in domestic and international offshore and onshore basins with a focus on challenging reservoirs. Bob is currently with Corsair Petrophysics as a consulting Petrophysicist where he splits his time between technical activities related to dealing with reservoirs of both conventional and unconventional natures. Bob has a long track record in integrated reservoir studies with an emphasis on seismic reservoir characterization.

Bob is a former SPWLA Distinguished Lecturer, President of DWLS; an AAPG Certified Petroleum Geologist, past president of the SPE GCS Reservoir Study Group and a member of the SPWLA and SPE. He has published numerous papers in the SPWLA, AAPG, GCAGS and GSA on a variety of topics.

Thank you everyone who attended the RMAG-DWLS Symposium, we had a great attendance and all the speakers did an excellent job, thanks to all of them and bthe RMAG-DWLS committee to make this event possible!  Our last event of the year is quickly approaching, on November 19th we have our last luncheon for 2019 with Robert Lieber presenting “Conventional Petrophysical Tools for Improved Understanding of Unconventional Reservoirs”.  Last but not least, I would like to welcome Gama Firdaus as our Mines Student Representative, we are looking forward to a closer relationship with students and the school.

As 2019 winds down and we bundle up for the cold winter months, we’re also peering over our scarves and into 2020 towards the warm glow of our upcoming luncheon speaker lineup and Spring Workshop.

First to gather the wood from our recent event – the DWLS-RMAG Fall Symposium “Multiscale Imaging for Reservoir Optimization” held last month in Lakewood was a great success. Almost 80 geoscientists attended the 11-speaker event, and early feedback is overwhelmingly positive. Thanks to Katerina Yared (Director at Large, SM Energy) for her hard work on this technologically robust and interesting workshop!

Stacking the logs to build the fire for the cold winter months to come are our upcoming luncheon speakers. This November 19, we are pleased to welcome back Robert Lieber of Corsair Petrophysics, who will speak on “Conventional Petrophysical Tools for Improved Understanding of Unconventional Reservoirs”. After a December break, we will open 2020 with Schlumberger’s Ridvan Akkurt in January, who will present “Machine Learning for Well Log Normalization”. We will keep your petrophysical woodstoves burning bright in February and March with the presentations of Max Peeters (Petrophysical Consultant) with: “Clay Types Derived from Logs Using the Petrophysical Stepchild ‘Photo-electric Effect’ and Apparent Matrix Densities,” and also from Daniel Krygowski of The Discovery Group with: “Pattern Recognition in a Digital Age: A Gameboard Approach to Determining Petrophysical Parameters”.

And finally, to light the kindling under all of you is our Call for Papers for the annual DWLS Spring Workshop. Our 2020 topic is: “Horizontal petrophysics: Applications and interpretation techniques in reservoir characterization”. It will be held Wednesday, April 29, 2020, at the American Mountaineering Center in Golden, Colorado. Be on the lookout for a formal Call for Papers with more details soon. Please submit your red-hot abstracts and burning questions to myself at: VP_Technology@dwls.spwla.org.

DWLS Yearly Members,

DO NOT DELAY! The time of year has come and is almost passed to pay your $10.00 yearly dues or $75.00 lifetime dues for the DWLS 2019-2020 season. If your dues are not paid by Tuesday, Nov. 26th, 2019, your email will be dropped from our mailing list, and you will not be able to get the member rate on workshops for next spring.

Please go to http://dwls.spwla.org/Shopping_Mall.htm and find this section to pay your dues, and please don’t forget to fill out the form to update your contact info! Thanks!
