Natural Fractures Characterization from Openhole Logs

Patricia E. Rodrigues
Seispetro Geoconsulting

Abstract

When present, natural fractures may play a critical role in the productivity of the reservoir by enhancing the fluid communication between the reservoir matrix and the borehole. Conventional, non-oriented logs such as GR, RHOB or Resistivity (among others)  and specialized, oriented logs such as FMI, FMS logs or cross-dipole sonic, can be used for the characterization of the natural fractures in the vicinity of the well bore. Typically, specialized logs are the preferred choice when it comes to fracture characterization along the borehole because they provide measures of fracture intensity and orientations (within the limitations of each tool). However, specialized logs are more expensive than conventional logs and this limits their availability for fracture characterization studies. To address the issue of data availability in all wells, we turn our attention to conventional logs to see what kind of information they can provide. Since conventional logs may show different responses in fractured vs nonfractured rocks, these differences can be used to indicate the presence (or absence) of natural fractures, and the amount of the perturbation could be used as a qualitative indication of fracture intensity.

This presentation summarizes the main concepts, applications, advantages, and limitations of using specialized and conventional logs for natural fracture characterization. For the specialized logs, we discuss technical limitations such as sampling bias, aperture measurements and fracture porosity estimation.  For the conventional logs, we discuss the importance of analyzing different logs, establishing a clear nonfractured scenario, calibrating with independent data, and understanding the variability of the anomalies at a regional scale.

Speaker Biography

Patricia E. Rodrigues received a Ph.D. in geophysics from Colorado School of Mines and a B.S. and M.S. in chemical engineering from Universidad Simón Bolivar (Venezuela). She has more than 25 years of experience in research and application of reservoir characterization technologies, specializing in petrophysics and rock physics for the oil and gas industry. She worked 8 years for PDVSA-Intevep and two years for Tricon Geophysics on seismic petrophysics and integrating well data through rock physics methodologies. In 2006, she joined DRM Energy Corp., a startup oil and gas company, while she also worked for iReservoir as a senior petrophysicist. While at iReservoir, she tested and used iMineralysis™ extensively and suggested numerous improvements. After iReservoir, she went back to school to complete her Ph.D. while working part-time for Newfield Exploration Company. In 2014, she joined Whiting Petroleum as Sr. Petrophysical Manager and Director of Geology and Geophysics until 2020, when she joined SeisPetro as Petrophysical Advisor.  Dr. Rodrigues is an expert in multimineral analysis, and she is the instructor of the SPWLA class Petrophysical Multimineral Analysis.

I hope that 2023 is off to a good start! Taking a quick look at some of the stats from January of 2022 and January of 2023, it’s looking like a great year for the oil and gas industry. If we look at the US rig reports, land rigs are up 153 this year as compared to last with activity picking up in all basins including the Rockies!

I am excited to this what new technologies and projects 2023 brings. Please see Katerina’s list of events see Winter/Spring as we have a packed schedule. Hope to see you all in February.

From the VP - Technology

Katerina Yared

We kicked off 2023 in a great way looking at a wonderful overview on the multitude of geothermal energy with a great talk from Ben Burke and Johanna Ostrum from Transitional Energy. I am glad to have gotten a great amount of interesting questions.

Our February talk will be from our very own Patricia E. Rodrigues (Seispetro Geoconsulting) entitled “Natural Fractures Characterization from Openhole Logs”.  In March we will have Cordax present “Cluster Efficiency Logging (Before & After Fracturing). Cordax improvements in Completion Diagnostics!”

In April we have our in-person workshop scheduled for April 4th: “CORE -to- LOG & LOG -to- CORE: THE EVOLUTION OF TYING TWO DIMENSIONS TOGETHER”.  Please submit your abstracts or any speakers you would like to hear about to me at VP_Technology@DWLS.SPWLA.ORG

Our April Lunch and Learn talk will be given by our very own Bob Lieber (Corsair Petrophysics) entitled: “Rock Type Recognition Using Deterministic Methodologies for the Codell Sandstone of the DJ Basin”.

As we begin a new calendar year, it’s time we remember all the fun we have had in past years.  In this spirit, I need to remind you we have various additional workbooks and other materials that can grace your bookshelves, simply by purchasing them here.

Most items can be picked up at the next luncheon, or you may contact me to make other arrangements.
